Courage

Courage is necessary for implementing many other personal characteristics and values such as, confidence, honesty, and resiliency.  Having courage doesn’t necessarily mean that a person is not scared or fearful.  It means that they do not allow their fear to keep them from moving forward.  They face their challenge head on in spite of their fear.

Courage does not consist of only the physical bravery that gets portrayed in stories like, David and Goliath, or superhero movies like, Wonderwoman or Superman.  As children, we grow up thinking of physical bravery as courage because we can visualize these stories.  However, the more inspiring stories of bravery and courage come from stories of social activism, world change-makers, innovation, entrepreneurs, and the ones that persevere in reaching their dreams.  Nelson Mandela, Ghandi, Walt Disney, Marie Curie, are a few of the famous brave and courageous souls many of us know.

As an artist, courage is needed when presenting my artwork to the public.  I must be ready to accept criticism, praise, misunderstandings, and different perspectives on interpretations.  I must have the courage to persevere through rejection, remain confident in my talents under criticism, and maintain integrity in my work.  Each one of us faces challenges in our work and in our careers that call forth courage.  Life, in general, demands it.  If we can not find our courage, then we can not move forward.  Our growth will be stunted until we find that place within ourselves where courage resides.  We must call her forth.  Use her to face our fears.

The following is a poem from my book, Exposed: The Naked Truth on Beauty.  This poem was written to coincide with the painting, Courage.

Close your eyes
Still the mind
There you will find,
past fear’s façade,
Deep inside
The place Courage resides.

Summon her
Bring her near
She will make all possibilities clear.
Life is full of challenges
Exert the effort
Achieve your goals
Don’t let a better future disappear.

Close your eyes
Still the mind
Find where Courage resides.
Summon her
Bring her near
Let HER take prisoner of your fear.
